Life Experience Degree

Life Experience Degree

So, what is this so-called Life Experience Degree and how does it work? Is it indeed just a scam that had evolved as a result of the proliferation of online colleges? If it is not, then would it be worth your time and money to invest in such a program? These are the questions that we are going to answer shortly as we look into what a Life Experience Degree is.

First and foremost, a Life Experience Degree can be earned through the college evaluating your resume/credentials. They are going to give you college credits based on your experience. But, an entire degree “cannot” be earned through “life experience credits”. In short, it only applies to general education and elective credits. You cannot earn a credible degree based on life experience alone. No accredited college or university in the United States will offer such a program.

Now you might ask how other colleges, especially the ones online, get away with it.Are these Life Experience Degrees even legitimate? Well, the answer is “to some extent”. According to bakersguide.com, “On the undergraduate level, you can earn an entire associates or bachelor’s degree through a demonstration of prior learning. Demonstrating prior learning typically involves using transfer credits, credit by examination, or portfolio development and evaluation. Please note that prior learning assessment is a more formal procedure than so-called credit for life experience and is recognized as a legitimate means of granting credit.”Therefore, it is safe to say that you can earn credit and even an undergraduate degree through a demonstration of prior learning – but that is all.An MBA or Ph.D. degree based on life experience is impossible.

Though Life Experience Degree is not exactly a scam, there are many schools, especially online, that offer quick and easy ways to earn an entire college degree based on your life experience alone. But if you would look closely into their advertisements you would notice that they lack accreditation from verified institutions, and this lack of accreditation is already a warning sign not to sign up. Beware!

But now that we have established that these programs exist and are to some extent credible and useful (especially when from an accredited school), how is a Life Experience Degree going to benefit you in the future should you decide to sign up for one?

Well, first and foremost, it will give you the edge among other applicants who do not even have any degree or a proof of their skillset to boot. You see, you may have done past courses and other learning which equals an Associate, Bachelor or Master’sDegree, but you accumulated that learning in a variety of contexts with no resulting degree outcome. This is where Life Experience Degree comes in. A prior learning assessment process may conclude with an accredited degree in a short amount of timeand in the subject of your prior studies or “life experience”. Your transcripts then credibly reflect all of your learning.

Seeing Life Experience Degree in a whole new light: College credit for life experience is “legally” defined by the U.S. Department of Education as credit earned by students for what they have learned through independent study, non-credit adult courses, work experience, portfolio demonstration, previous licensure or certification, or completion of other learning opportunities (military, government, or professional). With this in mind and through thorough research, you should be able to find an accredited institution to issue you with a legit Life Experience Degree that you can present to your employers.

Again, on the undergraduate level, you can acquire a whole associate degree or bachelor’s degree through an assessment of earlier learning (includes utilizing exchange credits, credit by examination, or portfolio improvement and assessment). Also remember that“prior learning assessment” is a more formal approach and is considered a legit method for issuing credit. Provided that you can exhibit that you have learned something equivalentto substance taught in a course then you can gain college credits and apply them for a Life Experience Degree. That is exactly how this program should work.

There are many universities that provide life experience-based degrees in different majors. Just some of the examples are data engineering, accounting, information technology, drafting, business administration, and even nursing. Students may take up some or any of these degrees to help them cope in the competitive working industry that we have todayand so that they can compete well with other people who already have degrees but still need feasible employment experience.Accredited Life Experience Degrees may alsoinclude management-supported courses, workshops, proficiency confirmation,and/or military instruction, and also courses taken at a school, college, professional or specialized institutions. Volunteer work with important associations and autonomous composition and perusing may also check to verify life experience based professional education.

Life Experience Degree originated from the concept of “non-traditional education”. In our society today, there are prominent and successful individuals who have had no formal university education. Not to say that they did great dropping out of college, but they simply found it necessary to do so at that timeand prior to obtaining the degree that they wanted. We are referring to Bill Gates and Steve Jobs who were both famous college dropouts. To date, there are still many people like them who have attained an extensive education simply through life experiences. Some have even become experts in their respective fields and professions. What is mutual, though, among many of these people is the lack of formal educational credentials. This is also what often limits their personal and professional advancement, and for most adults, earning these credentials may already be impossible as they are already busy making a living. Going back to school and sitting in classes for a formal education just is not convenient anymore.

Life Experience Degree wasestablished with thisprinciple:“that degrees based on work experience, or in general, life experience, should be available to everyone regardless of status, location, wealth, career and/or family commitments.” (degreepros.com).
