Going to college can be costly, that is why there are some people that contend themselves with a high school diploma and proceed to working rather than attend university. Those that are lucky enough to get a college scholarship are the only ones that decide to make the next move after graduating from high school.

How does one obtain a scholarship? You can apply for a scholarship with any foundation, but be prepared. You will have to provide them with an essay or two as part of the judging process.

Most scholarship foundations require you to write an essay, and it should be a very good one at that. The essay could essentially be about anything under the sun. Although the topics may be diverse, they have but one goal: to reveal your character as a person. That is why the essays need to be injected with your personal beliefs and ideas about the subject, and that requires a thorough understanding of the topic.

Starting the Essay

Writing the essay is not that difficult, but one may suffer from writer’s block in the beginning. To keep it simple, you need to know or understand why you are writing the essay. You can either start by checking out the essay question, as it could help you find out the structure of your essay in the making.

Show Your Character Within the Essay

The most important part in writing the essay is the requirement of showing your personal character in the literature. Find out how the topic is relevant to your personal life, and make the relationship the focal point of your writing. For example, if your topic is about the financial difficulties of the times, you can show through examples how you made it through your own financial crises. This gives the judges a look at how good you are at managing yourself in times of hardships.

Proofread Your Work

A scholarship is not only meant to show your character as a person, but also to gauge your knowledge and prowess. Keep in mind that you need to be careful about your grammar and your spelling. It is important to keep proofreading your work, as proofreading allows you to spot areas that need improvement. You can also minimize typographical errors if you read through your work before you submit it.

Be your own editor, but at the same time you can also ask opinions from the people around you about your essay. Sometimes the old saying, “two heads are better than one” works really well.
